Luminar Neo for Lightroom: My Finishing Workflow Explained

Lightroom: The Foundation of Everything
Lightroom is still where every image starts for me.
This is where I handle the technical side of the edit, getting exposure right, balancing white and colour, refining contrast, and shaping the overall look of the image.
It’s not about creativity at this stage. It’s about control.
By the time I finish in Lightroom, the image should already be solid. Clean. Balanced. Usable.
And if it isn’t? I don’t try to “fix it later” in another program.
I go back and get it right here first.

This is the part of my workflow that changed everything for me.
I stopped trying to make Lightroom do everything.
Instead, I started thinking in terms of:
Editing = structure
Finishing = emotion
Editing is where the image becomes technically correct.
Finishing is where it starts to feel like something.

No starting over.
Just a clean handoff between structure and finishing.
Adding Mood, Depth & Atmosphere
This is where Luminar Neo really earns its place.
Most of the time, I’m not doing anything extreme. It’s subtle adjustments that make the biggest difference:
lifting atmosphere into the shadows
adding soft contrast depth
enhancing colour mood
refining tonal separation
It’s not about changing the image, it’s about strengthening what’s already there.
And because it’s fast, I can be intentional without overworking the image.
The Orton Effect: My Go-To Finishing Tool
If there’s one tool I keep coming back to, it’s the Orton Effect.
Traditionally, achieving this look involves Photoshop, layers, blur blending, masking, and a fair bit of time.

Could I push it further with masks, effects, and workarounds? Sure.
